Asiacentric Proposition: Asia Awareness and its Core Values in Global Communication

Abstract

Asia has long been ignored in Chinese communication study. With Asia increasingly playing an important role in international stage, Asian communication researchers start to re-indentify Asia’s position in global historical course and turn to an independent cultural discourse of Asiacentric proposition. An Asiacentric proposition should use and go beyond the experience of non-Western orientation criticism and traditional Asiacentric ideas, thus develop indigenous cultural diversity, and integrate theories from the orient and the occident. In this process, it is necessary to focus on Asia’s historical traditions, Western experiences and modern transformation. An Asiacentric proposition provides core values for reconstructing regional identity, transcending internal conflicts, and returning to the world’s problems. The significance of Asiacentric proposition to China is also discussed.
