In recent years, with the reform and opening policies going further, the transition of market economy, and the adjustment of social interest pattern, mass incidents are increasing, which has become a prominent problem affecting the construction of a harmonious socialist society. Meanwhile, the occurrence of mass incidents may lead to the government failure, partial loss of political power, and social chaos, which have attracted many concerns of the academic and produced a series of research results. Based on the mass incidents papers of CSSCI publication source in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI in short in the following), the paper used the quantitative and visual analysis methods to study the number, the research institutions, authors, citations number, subject field, and key words of mass incidents, which can help us fully understand the research progress of mass incidents in China. Five main findings are derived. First, the research on the mass incidents in China has experienced four stages: exploration stage, gradual development stage, rapid development stage, and fallback stage. Second, it has formed a multi-disciplinary integration of management, sociology, and political science. Third, in terms of research topics, it mainly discusses the definition, causes, classification and characteristics, evolution, and countermeasures of mass incidents. At the same time, rural mass incidents, online collective behaviors, and environmental mass incidents have become hot topics in the research of mass incidents. Moreover, on the basis of focusing on macro research, the research on mass incidents has also begun to shift to the micro.
