The Influence of Paternalistic Leadership on Employee’s Performance in the Context of Small and Micro High-tech

Abstract

Based on the 237 employee-HR manager dyads survey data sampling from the small and micro high-tech enterprises in Pearl River Delta, this study takes paternalistic leadership as a critical internal motivation and explores the impact mechanism of paternalistic leadership on employee’s performance. The results indicate that the three dimensions of paternalistic leadership, i.e., the authoritarian leadership, benevolent leadership and moral leadership, can promote employee’s task performance as well as contextual performance respectively. These promotions may result from the employee’s identification to his/her boss. Furthermore, the promoting functions of the authoritarian leadership and benevolent leadership are more significant for those employees with strong traditionality.
