Abstract

In order to explore the relationship between Cantonese-Mandarin diglossia children’s language study and their cognitive flexibility, the thesis mainly used three experiments of the Dimension Change Card Sort Task (DCCS), which is widely used for the task of cognitive flexibility. There is an obvious significant level among Cantonese-Mandarin diglossia groups and single language groups. It may draw a conclusion from the fact that Cantonese-Mandarin diglossia children have dominance of cognitive flexibility compared with the single language children. It suggested that Cantonese-Mandarin diglossia have similar mechanisms as bilinguals. It showed that these positive multilingual effects on cognitive flexibility extend to children speaking two closely related dialects of the same language. The switching experience between the two languages should influence the cognition of Cantonese Mandarin speaking children.
