Abstract

As the "father of postmodernism," Ihab Hassan proposed the concept of posthuman as well, showing that there is some internal connection between postmodernism and posthumanism. The author of this article,completed in 1976,adopts the form of the masque play to put the background, text, quotations ,notes , history ,and mythology of a paper as the roles of the play. Various hot words that have frequently appeared- -such as Cyborg, cybernetic, Maxwell demon, Vitruvian, mutants, posthuman feminism- are all mentioned. The discussion is not superficial but starts from the ancient Greek mythology, to the alchemy tradition during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and to Turing's preditions of artificial intelligence. It, thus, reveals the inseparable history and future of imagination, art, and science. This article lays a framework for the related research of Donna Haraway, Rossi Braidotti, and Katherine Hayles. Its insights into the connection between nature and culture, the interpenetration of technology and art, the in-heritance of humanism and posthuman spirit have established the keynotes of the current posthuman discourse.
