Abstract
In recent years, a number of popular cultural works with Guangdong as the background have emerged. The internet drama Cat's Cradle, the music of Wu Tiao Ren, and the movie The Shadow Play are typical representatives. The spatial structure in the three works and the dialogue tension they constructed between the real space are topics worthy of discussion. The theme of abandoned children in Cat's Cradle echoes the situation in Zhanjiang, where the web movie was made, highlighting the hidden violence and crisis in the ruined space. The band Wu Tiao Ren, born in Haifeng County , observes the bottom of the society, forming a folk style with a mixture of local and cosmopolitan characteristics. The Shadow Play takes Xian Cun, an urban village in Guangzhou, as its realistic prototype, and uses film noir as its style to explore the deep and dark side of historical memories. Compared with the enthusiasm for modernity in Guangdong's popular culture in the 1980s and 1990s, these texts collectively express inquiries and reflections on modernity in a marginal spatial structure.
