“说文四大家”在说文学史上分量极重，“段、桂、王、朱”的形成有着深厚的历史渊源，然而清中叶亦有“段、桂、严、王”之判断。这两种看法的产生或因体例不同、或因著作时间早晚。朱骏声著作刊刻最晚，未入“说文四大宗”，一方面受到著作体例的限制;另一方面，其打破常规的编排方式，时人未识其善;而严可均未入“说文四大家”主要由于著作不能突破前人藩篱，仅对许书订正、修补。

Four Big Sects of Shuowen has the important position in the Shuowen’s history .Duan段, Gui桂, Wang王 and Zhu朱 have profound historical origins. In the mid Qing Dynasty there was purportedly Duan段, Gui桂, Yan严and Wang王, but this view originated from different sources or styles or was base on the different appearance time. Investigation may draw the following rough conclusion: Zhu Junsheng was not included into the Four Big Sects of Shuowen because he fell behind it and his style did not comply with the Shuowen and also because his breaking of the rules did not help him to be recognized. However, the failure of Yan Kejun严可均 to be included into the Four Big Sects of Shuowen could mainly attribute to his incompetence to go beyond the styles of the previous works because what he did was just the correction and repair.
