Traditionally, analysis of educational and social status attainment solely focuses on the influence of father rather than mother in terms of family background. As more and more women are participating in the labor force and are increasingly independent from men, female even demonstrates a strong impact on their offspring. In that sense, the rise of women in economic power and social status even challenges the patriarchal society. Empirically, this research surprisingly finds the evidences that children are significantly influenced by mother rather than father. The data used in this research is Chinese General Social Survey 2010 (CGSS 2010, n=11,785). The main dependent variables are years of education, income and ISEI. Years of education represent educational attainment, income and ISEI reflected social status attainment. The independent variables are years of education, ISEI when the children was 14 years old and the political status. For the purpose of comparison, the data are divided by mother and father. Three multiple linear regression models are developed to examine the relationships between mothers factor in the family background and childrens education and social status attainment. Results indicate that mothers factor is a significant predictor of childrens achievement. After controlling Demographic variables and fathers factors, mothers factors also have a remarkable impact on childrens education and social status attainment, and to some extent, mothers factor attaches more important effect on children than father. The results support the initial hypothesis that children benefit more from mothers rather than fathers factors.
